Multiplicity

(Clearly Multiplicity)  (Clearly Unity)

Unity

  • Distinct parts, figures can distinguished/isolated
  • Diffused lighting
  • Cut every figure out
  • For example, in figure A, all the figures are distinct and clear outlines. If you were to cut out the figures from the painting, it is easy to cut each figure out.
  • Figures welded together; not distinguishable
  • Colors blend & mingle
  • Strong directed light
  • For example, in figure B, all the figures are welded together and blended into darkness. If you were to cut out one of the characters from the painting, it would not be easy to cut each figure out.
